Basalt fiber is a next-gen material and can easily replace glass fiber as a reinforcement for composite laminates. It occupies the middle of the market in terms of both price and performance compared to fiberglass and carbon fiber.
It provides significant advantages in mechanical performance over glass fiber while being significantly less expensive than carbon fiber. In the production of boats, it is a material of much higher quality than the very known and popular fiberglass. The production of basalt fibers is based on the use of the most common type of rock in the world and, unlike the production of glass fibers, significantly reduces energy and water consumption.
Technology
Basalt is a natural material obtained from volcanic rocks. Formed as a result of rapid cooling of the magma. In the process of converting volcanic rocks into fiber, no toxic acids are released and there is no CO2 emission. Although basalt is slightly denser than glass fibre, at 2.63 g/cm3, its additional performance advantages mean that basalt fiber composites can be even lighter and allow for significantly greater design creativity compared to glass fibre. Basalt is also much more efficient and more insulating in high temperature conditions. Considering that the raw material is widely available, it does not require a complicated processing process, and composites based on fibers based on it show better parameters. Usage of Basalt Fiber in the production of yacht laminates, in our opinion, is the “next step” to better & more responsible production.
STRENGHT

Research conducted by BOATDEV has shown that basalt fibers in yacht composites have over 200% better mechanical parameters than polyester-glass laminates.
GREEN PRODUCTION

The raw material from which basalt fibers are made is a natural raw material, and its processing is much less complicated than in the case of the production of glass fibres.
NEXT GENERATION MATERIAL

Laminate products using basalt fiber are products of much higher quality. It is a sign of a premium product whose production is responsible and more ecological.
IMPLEMENTATION IN PRODUCTION

Basalt fibers are compatible with glass and carbon fibers. They can be filtered with polyester, epoxy or vinyl ester resins. They show much better filterability than carbon fibres. This makes them an ideal supplement in production, in places that must show higher mechanical or thermal resistance.
Our research on basalt fibers is conducted in cooperation with the Department of Biomaterials and Composites of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow.
Thanks to the cooperation with D-BOATS, as reference samples, we test the compositions of laminates of mass-produced boats and, based on them, we analyze alternative compositions using basalt materials. This is a big advantage of our R&D because we want our products to meet the needs of production shipyards, not laboratories.
Research and development projects
As part of cooperation with the Bridge Alfa fund – PLATINUM ALFA Sp. z o. o. and the National Center for Research and Development, We are conducting a research and development project entitled “Research on an innovative composite component for the production of boats, consisting of volcanic fibers”.
Basalt fiber, which can easily replace fiberglass as reinforcement, occupies the middle of the market in terms of both price and performance compared to glass fiber and carbon fiber. It provides significant advantages in mechanical performance over glass fiber while being significantly less expensive than carbon fiber. Basalt fiber is stiffer and stronger than glass fiber and exhibits additional impact resistance.
